Black on the Homestead is a documentary film project that
uses Conner Homestead as a lens to explore Black homesteading in the United States–from the historical context of early farmers who were able to take advantage of the Homestead Act of 1862 to current homesteaders sharing their journey and building communities online; and finally, to developing collectives seeking communal safe spaces from racial, gender, sexual orientation and other marginalizing experiences.
Through interviews and shadowing Black homesteaders on their properties, we’ll document historical context and contemporary issues while facilitating a support network and bringing greater awareness to people who film and television have largely ignored in their stories and portrayals of homesteading life.
